Michelle’s Top Five Horror Movies of 2024 So Far
JD made one of these, so now I gotta, I guess. Let’s get the movies I need to see out of the way first:
- A Quiet Place: Day One
- The Exorcism
- The Watchers
- Abigail
- Tarot
- Sting
- Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2
- Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
- Immaculate
- Arcadian
- Cuckoo
- Love Lies Bleeding
- I Saw the TV Glow
I know. There are a lot. I’m not happy about it, either. I’ll watch them by December to give a fair “Best of 2024,” but I didn’t expect to have to turn in my homework only halfway through the year, teacher!
Now onto the good stuff. In no particular order, here are my favorite horror films so far.
Late Night With the Devil
Directed by: Colin Cairnes, Cameron Cairnes
Written by: Colin Cairnes, Cameron Cairnes
“Late Night with the Devil” was already on my Top 5 list before JD had some stunning revelations during his at-home rewatch, but when he put out his blog with all the hidden images, it blew me away.
David Dastmalchian perfectly embodies a charismatic and likeable talk show host which helps sell the idea that you are watching a real program. If this wasn’t a horror film and was something I randomly flipped on while TV surfing, I would feel compelled to watch it anyway. The horror is just a bonus.
La Mesita del Comedor (The Coffee Table)
Directed by: Caye Casas
Written by: Cristina Borobia, Caye Casas
I’m easy to please. I hear “This movie is emotionally devastating,” and I click “Play.”
This is one you should go into with very little information, so I won’t say much except “The Coffee Table” doesn’t disappoint. It’s uncomfortable, anxiety-inducing, harrowing… and most importantly, enjoyable.
Who knew living room furniture could be so frightening?
The First Omen
Directed by: Arkasha Stevenson
Written by: Tim Smith, Arkasha Stevenson, Keith Thomas
Mainstream horror can be disappointing because it often doesn’t take risks and shies away from being “too scary” or “too gory,” but “The First Omen” leaned into everything it was meant to be and gave horror fans a film they deserved.
Not a fan of “The Omen” from 1976 or 2006? Me neither! I’ve never seen them! You don’t have to be in order to like this 2024 release.
MaXXXine
Directed by: Ti West
Written by: Ti West
Without a doubt, this is my favorite of the X trilogy, and it’s not even close. Mia Goth is an absolute BADASS.
I’m running out of ways to say, “This movie good. Me liked it.” But this movie was good, and me liked it.
Pamyo (Exhuma)
Directed by: Jang Jae-hyun
Written by: Jang Jae-hyun
Finally! A movie poster that isn’t red and black!
Exhuma was full of lore commonly known in Korea and Japan, yet despite being ignorant to so much of it, it didn’t feel like I was missing out. They did a great job of making this accessible to everyone, and the parts I didn’t know felt like really good world-building that was exclusive to this film.
I tried to give a quick recount of some of the lore I learned about from forum threads afterwards. You can check out episode #213 if you want to hear some of it.
